Blame me ...

Man, you're right ---- (':oops:') The Linuxtag starts the 22. 06 .2005 and ends 25. 06 .2005 As I heard yesterday you'll have to pay for LinuxTag this year. :-( The years before you could easily register online and print the ticket at home. (The ticket was under GPL) Maybe some of the Debian guys he...

Absolutely right

the boxes at home usually need no bios password and locked cases. A home computer probably shouldn't need to be secured like an NSA server (I'm just worried about my kids someday... I've sworn off technological solutions to parenting problems to avoid an arms race, hopefully it works). I guess you'r...

4 graphs ?

If you have the Pentium D Extreme Edition which will have HT
enabled for both cores will be kind of a quad CPU system for the OS.

Are there 4 graphes in taskmanager when you're running 4 real CPUs
in your box?

I guess that time will tell :-?

CrossoverOffice

@Wolfram:

How about a nice Linux running CrossoverOffice that will run
the windows apps?
I'm using Crossover 4.1 without problems. Running MS Office XP
and Internet Explorer for those sites that really need IE.

Have a look at www.codeweavers.com

hi again, it's nice to see that the mag. I rely on is known in other regions of this world. If Intel is trying to make another poor implementation like you say they are trying to do with their dual core and also trying to sell it at a high price then I guess their arrogance will catch up with them s...

A big sorry

Sorry for not giving the source where I got the conclusion about cache design for dual cores from. It was in the German IT magazine called c't. I'm not sure if anyone cam or would like to get German IT magazines over the channel or even over in the US. Sorry, the article is not accessible on the net...

hi jaybird, I guess your problem did not dissapear til now... ? Some ideas I got while reading the whole thread: - Second harddrive is for temp. storage, avi files and swap, right? no prob. for mixing ECC/NonECC

hi there, there's nor problem with mixing ECC and non-ECC RAM. All that happens it that bios detects (at least one) non-ECC module and turns off ECC for the whole RAM. Sad for those modules which would support ECC. It's not too bad for desktop machines not to have ECC. Modern OS (yes, even the M$ on...

BeBox, too. The BP6 system will replace my P3 800 system at home. I'll move the P3 to my students' appartement. At first I wanted to by a lnotebook to carry everywhere I go. No need for notebook now - and the BP6 with all stuff for a complete box made about 70 Euro. (Can't get a notebook for this. ;...

dedicated cache

Hi purrkur, I'm not sure about the cache thing ... :-? Any time the power4 or power5 multicore beasts are compared to "dedicated cache" - designs they win in the eyes of the tester. Cheaper way ...

hi there, it's well known that NT (2000/XP) passwords can be reset if one has "hardware" access to your box. All one needs is a boot floppy (or CD) from [link]http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/[/link] and a bios allowing to boot from either one. So if you want to set up a box that is "secure" ...

Dual Core

Hi there, I guess the reason why 925x will not support dual core Pentium is that the Pentium D will not really be a "dual core" chip. Intel just packs two Pentium Cores in one package. Each will have it's own L1 and L2 cache. The Extreme Edition will have L3 cache also. But the cores are "stand alon...

no USB2.0 then

@hyperspace thanks for the information. I guess I'll pull out the USB2.0 card. The ISDN thing is more important for me. Sharing the IRQ will probably not be the problem, but having only one bus master signal for PCI 4 and 5 really limits the use of at least one if them. But I already thought it'll b...

Thanks for the reply ... Maybe I'll test this later. By now I boot off the IDE HDD on primary IDE connector. When the system is set up completely I'll post some information here. Some update: I moved the 2,4 GHz box over to my office at uni because the Athlon64 became the layout-machine for the whole office. So most of the time its in use for layout work. The other PCs are still at home. My mothers and my brothers PC connect to the net via ISDN cards. The rest connect to the...

thanx for the replies ... I am aware of the RV bios. But that was not the original idea. As far as I understood the RV w/o HPT removes the boot screen of HPT. But the controler itself stays kind of "online". Thus meaning it still uses an IRQ and stays accessible from OS. When the HPT is set to be di...

@hyperspace

The SCSI controler is placed in PCI slot 2.
I thought slot 2 would be a good place because it's
the only slot that does not have to share an IRQ.

Disable HPT completely ?

Hi there, again a lazy user. Hi FloW, how did you get your system booting from SCSI? My system does not boot from SCSI. There are 3 HDD connected to the controler. (See my sig.) I guess it is! See, one of the GPUs will do all the graphics using ~ 8MB graphics memory. The other one can do all the real time compiling you need for java and stuff. Having ~504 MB local memory will really speed up the compiling process, will it? ;-) This way you still got the CPU doing nothing bu...
