from reading up on this myself, 2.4 SMP kernel also has a pretty nasty memory leak in debian, I've noticed this myself when testing, SMP kernel (aswell as poor hardware support compared to non-SMP kernel) was having fun with memory useage, so I switched back to the non-SMP 2.4 kernel and all is fin...

Re: Problems with Debian Sarge 3.1 Stable (2.6 Kernel mainly
I actually think its purely down to nast nasty cap issues... It is hard to say... I currently have running Debian Sarge 3.1 Stable with kernel 2.4.27-3-686 (non-SMP) even though I have dual Cel 500's in there (the SMP kernel is only 2.4.27-2-686, and has much less support for hardware even compared...

Now you know I'm going to take you to task on this one! Their is no such thing as "faultless" code. It obviously couldn't be faultless since it failed to run on HT. With all the millions of systems like that out there, they obviously didn't do a very good job in testing. It's hard to believe they w...

the HT is writen only to speed up the processes by cheating system that it has 2 cores instead of one....now they are making dual-core CPUs, so it's normal to abandon the emulated dual-core technology such as HT!!! :D HT isn't emulation. It is technology that allows a single core to process 2 or mo...

I have removed my old home-brew intranet server and replaced it with my BP6 running 2x533MHz procs at "turbo speed" (544MHz) and 640MB memory. The box it is sitting is is pretty sizeable which means I won't have any issues adding new drives in the future when needed and it is being fed by a 350W pow...

But some of the blame has to go against the code as it was written. I should mention that the software that gave us issues was a client and not a server side component. It is a financial application that does heavy duty calculations among other things. The code itself was faultless and worked on si...

OK, that is not a PC though :) The nicest computer/server I ever worked on was a Sun Enterprise 15000 machine with 72 processors. The nicest PC I will have the chance to work on, w...

Re: Intel confirms hyperthreading is a goner
I've never quite got your complaint on this thing? At worst it does nothing. When I was crunching SETI it most certainly made the systems faster. I've never seen any performance hit from using it. So what's the big deal. In the applications that it helps, it really helps. The ones it doesn't help, ...

My question is should I just slave it off the 20 gig or should I use RAID? I assume you are talking about striping (RAID 0). If that is the case then you can only use the capacity on both drives that is the same as the capacity of the smaller drive. You will also double your chances of messing up y...

Intel confirms hyperthreading is a goner
Most of you know that I have a certain dislike to Intel's Hyperthreading. Not the technology per se but Intel's implementation of it. It was never any good and it was never any more than just a marketing tool/gimmick. It seems like Intel is finally pulling the plug on the thing . They seem to be say...

Interesting. Now we got at least one reason why USB won't work reliably on the BP6! As for the burn-in thing, I don't really buy that theory. When you overclock a CPU, what happens is that you get a higher risk of transistor "leakage" inside the CPU. What some people refer to as "burn-in" won't hard...

My first was a Sinclair ZX Spectrum with the tremendous 48kb memory, dead flesh keyboard, built in basic instead of command line interface, a tape recorder for storage and the TV for screen. The year was 1983. I was 13 years old. Those were the days... People may laugh at the specs but truth of the ...

purrkur, you put on a different chipset cooler; what is it? With all the USB trouble i'm having I wonder if I should get a better cooler... Seems many people are having issues with USB on the BP6. I haven't used it at all to be honest with you so I wouldn't know. What I did was to buy a 40x40mm fan...

it's heat or, uhm,,, the third thing. :) Yeah. heat I've got under control with massive heatsinks and 80mm fans. I've even done what everybody here says is a necessity, that is a fan on the BX. At idle the heat measures 27C and during desktop usage they go up to maybe 30-31C. gotta keep 'em cool an...

My 400's overclock poorly & new usage for my BP6
I replaced my 366's with my 400's to see how well they would overclock. I can have them running stable at 80MHz fsb but not any higher than that. I tried to run them at 500MHz (83MHz fsb) and the board boots and runs but it will lock up after awhile. So much for that experiment. I would like to say ...

But don't be too sure though. My current BP6 won't do my 366's at 550, but they are stable at 523MHz (95MHz fsb). I know that other members here have seen the exact same thing. 523MHz is pretty good though. I have made some tests to see how they compare. The problem here seems to be my board and not...

Good article. I remember when 2.1 systems hit the market. Removing the subwoofer from the main speakers was all the rage, and it made sense. Take the subwoofer and move it out of the way, use small satellite speakers but have big sound. Then came 4.1, the first "real" surround with a speaker in each...

A few problems, the top capacitors are touching the heatsink. Natorx, I had the same problem actually (until I replaced the caps and made some arrangements so that wouldn't happen). I wouldn't worry too much about it though. If you touch the heatsink where the caps are touching then you will notice...
