some more info found just now...
in this review of fedora core 3 test 2: http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=8349 the guy talks about EXACTLY my same problem, calling it "the notorious nvidia soft freeze". i don't know if he has a smp kernel (this would definitly prove me wrong), but he says that recompiling without support for...

Hi again, I would recommend backing up and using 6106 (that is what I am using on my BP6) instead. unfortunatly those drivers did exibit the same issue, i use to upgrade the nvidia drivers some days after they are out, and i have this problem since many months. however, i'll keep an eye on the logs...

thanks for the quick reply There are two things that are lacking in your message and that is what Nvidia driver version you are using and what Nvidia card you are running. I am using the latest and greatest from Nvidia and a Geforce2 MX graphics adapter. I also got a Dual XEON machine at work using ...

Re: 2.65
Smooth on 2.6.5 Linux rachel.orbitsville.net.local 2.6.5 #1 SMP Sun Apr 4 17:07:11 BST 2004 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux Now if the damn APIC errors would just go away 8) just ignore them. they are known to be harmless on the bp6 since years ago. if you really don't want so see them recompile you...

please became root and do everything as the root user, you can do that typing: $ su - and entering the root password the bash prompt will change from $ to # apmd is NOT the apm module. do NOT use it. you don't need it to shut down your pc, i assure you. apmd is a program, more precisely a daemon, us...

you need to load the apm module with the parameter "power_off=1". i found this solution (works with both 2.4 and 2.6 kernels) looking at how knoppix was able tu shutdown my bp6. try knoppix and look for yourself if it works. on debian and debian-based distributions you need to look at the file /etc/...

Re: thinking about moving to linux - some questions!
I have a new PC, that will act as my main Windows based workstation, and is a repalcement to my trusty BP6, 2 x 366 PC, which has served my well over the past few years. I am thinking of keeping the BP6 machine as a linux based files server, and general linux 'experimental' machine. Does the highpo...

http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html a live cd (fully installable) with debian and a 2.4.19-xfs smp kernel. try it. it uses apm (don't ask me how...), and exactly that line in lilo. it switches off my bp6 regularly. it is also great in getting 3d working (tested on a voodoo3 and a radeon ddr...
