Now as to Billl, I think you're being a bit unfair. I did say I was in RANT mode.:rude: I wasn't even really picking on you guys anyway. Just Linux users in general. And mostly I was just letting off steam try not to take it too personal. I'm well aware I'm biting off a bit much but then thats usua...

I downloaded Debian (Sarge) and it's on 15 cd's. You probably didn't need to do that. I imagine you'll only use 10% of that software. The full package has all sorts of server-related stuff and tons of source code for everything. You're supposed to pick and choose what you need. [/begin Rant Mode :)...

I think it's fair to say that in some ways there is too much choice. At least for us that have lived in the Windows world most of our computing lives. Bah! I don't think there can be such a thing as too much choice, only too little. If you don't want to have to make choices, just install Suse, Mand...

Billl: Sorry for not tuning in sooner. I have been so busy that work will finally kill me if I don't get a break soon. Can someone walk us through a typical install? If I only had more time!!!!!!! Billl, let me put it this way: I will be loading both my machines up with Debian sometime in the near ...

What would be nice if one of you Linux guys would write a short getting started thread for all us Windows users. I downloaded Debian (Sarge) and it's on 15 cd's. My biggest questions are: 1) Will this new version even run on a BP6 class hardware? 2) Can someone walk us through a typical install? 3) ...

Re: Powerleap Neo-S370 Adaptor - Free For A Charitable Donat
I have in my hands, a brand new Powerleap Neo-S370 socket adaptor, still shrink-wrapped. It's absolutely ideal for your BP6 PIII mods. I hear they're hard to find these days. I'd like to offer it to the first person who will donate the sum of £25 (UK) to the DEC TSUNAMI EARTHQUAKE APPEAL. http://ww...

Billl, The BP6 is a unique mobo. Before I started using my current weak PSU I had good luck running below 2.0 volts on both cpus no-matter if OC'ed.(2 pair of 500s, 1pair of 366@550) Kuun runs a pair of 366@550 below 1.9 volts. It must be unique I've never had any luck OC'ing them below 2.0. But th...

Was going through closet and found a set of matching 366's  I havent been on the board for a few years it seems and I was supprised to see my account still active  I had bought two of these sets and when I sold my board I guess I forgot about the other set. I do remember testing both se...

Re: 3-wire fans
paid $10 for a pair of StarTech ball bearing units with 39mm tall heat sinks, andshould be good to go. Just watch the cpu temps carefully because I got no faith in 40mm serving as the only fans on your CPU's. 40mm fans are not built to move a lot of air. Watch the temps especially during high load....

It would connect to their server just fine, but most days report that there was nothing new to get. Antivir does use the network connection even when there was no other traffic, at least according to my firewall. AVG, on the other hand, did seem to have something new at least daily. I believe you a...

I used to use a program called AntiVir. However, I became concerned that days and even weeks would go by when there were no updates available. I switched to AVG quite recently because they updated their definitions more often. I suppose no system is foolproof. I've been using AntiVir for a couple y...

Re: overclocking from 366 to 550MHz
2. Have you had to increase the CPU voltage in order to get 550MHz to work? The 366's in general need a bit of a voltage tweek. It's pretty rare to find a pair that will run at 550 without doing so. I'd say what you have is pretty normal. Your lucky you even got one to run stable at default voltage...

Hi Dave, Do you think this will work even if the drive is encrypted? I've been told that may be an issue. I don't recall encrypting the drive, but I wouldn't put it past Win 2K server to do it automatically for security reasons --afterall, this is a domain controller. Thanks, _Merker19 No you would...

Dave Rave and other that are interested in Knoppix: I just found this link on Slashdot. It is a 134 page book (in pdf format) documenting Knoppix. It is for beginners too. I haven't had the time to look at it but I thought I should mention it for all that are interested. On that same theme Purrkur,...

Well all I know is what I've personally experienced over a number of years working with Seti. As to it being much a benchmark, probably not. Unless you go download the standard work unit used for benchmarking, and run that on all the machines. But over time you see a lot of work unit times and you c...

I am still not convinced. <rant mode> The only things that I have seen slow down with a modern OS compared to something like Windows 98 is boot times and responsiveness because of general bloat (larger programs take longer to load and get running and larger code means you are manipulating more data...

Sheesh! Doesn't anyone use floppies anymore? The simplist way to see if it's hardware or OS is to put a floopy in the drive and boot the thing. You never want to add complications to a trouble shooting problem. I'm not for or against any of those OS selections. But make your life easier and use the...
