When it was running, I used mine as my main workstation. I run Slackware Linux, and dabble in numerical programming for my physics courses, LaTeX typesetting (for class, and in the past, for pay). I do some 3d visualization (no not quake, stuff for class, 3d lattices for solid state physics--it is s...

Were the fans still running? From the temps, I would guess they weren't. Check to see if they run when the board is on, check to see if other fans run in their place or try the fans in another box to see if they turn on. My guess is that since they both went at the same time (an unlikely event), som...

I am a *nix person as well and of course computers should be named :) Being Icelandic, I use various names from Norse mythology. My main box shares my middle name, Thor and my secondary box (BP6) is called Loki. My wife's box is Sif (naturally), my firewall and router is Valhalla. My webserver goes...

If Im wrong on anything someone let me know. I've been putting together networks for a while (I built my middle school's network, and did an independent study all through highschool to help with the maintainence of the school network, so I've been around the block with large ethernet installs). 4 I...

I'm a *nix guy. All *nix machines get names. It's a long standing tradition from the early days of networking. My BP6 (down at the moment), is named rigel. My 486 laptop is proxima. My PII 350 at work is named neptune I use astronomical names for my computers (Rigel is a star in the Orion constellat...

phaedrus: How's it going buddy? You haven't given us an update lately. I've been out of town quite a bit the last two weeks. I got to do a bunch of backpacking over spring break. I got around to testing some more, and I guessed wrong about the diode mod. I highly suggest against it. It looks like t...

I'm going to try shorting D1 and D2 this weekend. Can't wait to hear how that turns out! :( is how it turned out. I'm running on my backup motherboard (PII400 system, uniproc, ugh). Shorting the diodes didn't help, in fact, it might have hurt. My board worked under load for about 45 minutes, and af...

PIIIs greater than 1.0GHz are Tualatins and the are FC-PGA2. 1.0GHz or less, they are FC-PGA. FC-PGA in both cases stands for "flip chip pin grid array". They could also accurately be called FCPPGA--PPGA means "plastic pin grid array", and the PIII's are still technically PPGA style packaging. The f...

I've modded my head so that I have two brains. WOW What kind of solder did you use? Can you post pics? It's a new nanotech polymer which interfaces with nerve cells. It forms a fractal "chipset," if you will, to allow both brains to use the spinal cord and to allow fast communication betw...

...solder on my board was old and didn't want to melt for anything. 133MHz FSB still eludes me. When I set the FSB to 110, 124 or 133... This makes me think that either the GTL+ bus or the AGP bus doesn't like the higher settings. However, I get the same symptoms when I run my AGP bus at 2/3 of the...

phaedrus, I read somewhere that there is a revision 7.1 soon to be released that supports 6 CPUs. It requires 384meg ram sticks though. I think there were capacitor problems with the rev7.0. Yeah. I'm saving my pesos for a rev 7.1. The only problem is those 384MB RAM modules are basically impossibl...

I think the BX can handle 133 if running uni-processor. Dual is just too much overhead for the BX to handle when overclocking higher than 110Mhz. I wonder if the BX was designed with Dual in-mind. Very interesting. This implies a new test. I'm going to have to try pulling one of my CPUs and seeing ...

Re: Where to get NEO ?
Well, doing the sandwich-thing with the NEOs will probably to the trick. But at the time I can't get my hands on a NEO adapter. :-( You only need to do the sandwich thing if you're going with tualatines. If you just want to use coppermines (PIIIs up to 1 GHz), then you just want the Neo 370S. Maybe...

Bottom line, you want 110 mhz fsb with PIII's, MUST COOL! I know. Cooling isn't my problem right now. After posting the above, I got curious, and pulled my PCI cards out and tested to see what my maximum FSB is right now. Turns out, I've got a hard limit between 104 and 106 MHz--in other words, she...

nice write up. bloody hard to get an indignant board to post. must buy a special hammer to intimidate them with next time. No. No hammer needed. We've got an understanding. Thrusday night, around 10:30, my box flatlined. I was running my computer as I usually do, and I was listening to the Detroit Industrial Underground 'net radio station, and my box had a hard crash. Re: Video card
BP6 only supports AGP 1x, so any fance board is useless. Actually, the BP6 supports AGP 1X and 2X. The BP6, as we all know, runs on the BX440 chipset. AGP 1x is defined as running at 66MHz, and having a dedicated path from the chipset. AGP 2x runs at 133MHz, and likewise, 4x and 8x run at 266MHz an...

Even still, the board will run 1x, 2x and Universal AGP 4x cards. The problem, as noted, is that the slot only goes at 1x (rated to 66MHz, but with SoftmenuII you can boost it to 100MHz, giving you AGP 1.5x ;)), which puts a limit on the bandwidth of the slot, which limits how much you can ship to y...

Sure it is true 64-bit hardware. AMD has extended the 32 bit ISA (Instruction Set Architecture) , just like Intel did in its time with the 386. AMD and Intel have extended their existing hardware paradigm (yet, again  ). They have not created new hardware for a true 64-bit world. IMO Of course...

I've had similar problems. What video card are you using? I've found that the 3dfx drivers are unstable (and unmaintained, so it's not likely to get fixed any time soon) as well as the closed source nVidia drivers. I can't say that I have seen the extreme Vtt fluctuation on either of my boards (ver 1.0 and 1.1) which is why I am also sceptical on replacing the Q6.
