Sheesh! Doesn't anyone use floppies anymore? The simplist way to see if it's hardware or OS is to put a floopy in the drive and boot the thing. You never want to add complications to a trouble shooting problem. I'm not for or against any of those OS selections. But make your life easier and use the ...

Re: OS's that support twin CPUs
I'd like to use an OS that will not bog the system down. I am still trying to figure out what you mean by this one. Yes, a more recent OS will work slower on older hardware but if you are only doing a single thing with this machine then the OS will be out of your way once it is booted and the softw...

CPU's
Purrkur you might try keeping an eye on Compgeeks (link below) right now the fastest they have is a pIII 700 but their stock changes all the time. The 700's were going for $29.50 used. Of course they do have faster 133's if you don't want to wait. I buy a lot of stuff there so I can say with confide...

I've never found the clock to be even close to being on time? I set my profile time to GMT -5 hrs, which should be USA EST? Maybe it's just me? But I do enjoy the stats page so don't take this as a complaint Derek, just a comment. :) Billl Hi Billl, No problem, however the clock should be correct n...

You might want to try stripping the system down to the bare essentials and see if it's still crashing on you. This would rule out your sound card and such. I wouldn't bet on the CPU's being bad though. I have a Celery 533 running at 824 thats been crunching SETI since 99 without hardly a burp. I thi...

I play Enemy Territory once a week with a certain group of people on a server that I host. My plan is to try out Doom3 and Unreal Tournament 4 as soon as I get the time to (which should maybe happen in my next life). I'm with Purrkur on this one. I'm thinking maybe in my next life I'll get to play ...

P4
I still stand by what I said earlier. And I agree with Purrkur to a point. Like the BP6, the P4 offers the most bang for the buck for the enthusiast. It certainly isn't going to replace a true dual processor board for performance in a server. But it does come damn close. The dual Athlon MP's may act...

Fair point about the P4, but does it give you the actual benefits of dual processors, or just some of them and only partially? The sort of thing I really like about my BP6 is when doing some task that needs not to be interrupted, I an isolate it on a CPU (with SMP seesaw). I can then cary on with a...

Lots of interesting stuff on the page. Via processors may be a disapointment in the desktop environment as no/small L2 cache really hurts but there should be a laptop manufacturer out there that grabbs them. One of those VIA dual or Quad boards could work in a laptop that currently uses a single Pi...

there is some sort of interrogation of the cpu by the bios, so that it 'knows' what it is supposed to run at. or it's a written intelligent guess. if you set it to something other than 8x and 66fsb it will error and reset back to the 300 option making you set it up again. UNLESS, you tell it to ign...

Thanks for the update Lungster. Just FYI, I checked the Xandros website and there is indeed a forum there for support where users help each other solve problems in the usual Linux spirit. the site is found here. You have to register (of course) to post, but you may find answers there to your DHCP p...

Kylewo, you might consider going with a DX9 video card like the ABIT Siluro FX-5200/128MB or the FX-5600/256MB. I understand that with the DX9 drivers the CPU has lessof a limiting effect on the GPU performance. I'm very pleased with my ABIT SiluroFX-5200 in my BP6-P-III/1100E @110Mhz!!! This card ...

No it isn't a bios problem. The bios sees the drive at full capacity just fine. It is a brand new board. This is purely a Windows problem in my particular case. After SP1 is installed Windows has no problem with it either. It's just the journey getting there that is tough. In his particular case it...
