Kuun: it's only got 2 leaking caps. so that shouldn't be the problem. Hehe. I laughed when I saw that. Do you think they put caps on the motherboard for decoration? If they are shot then they could definitely be the reason for your worries! They could also destroy other components on your motherboar...

What you could do is to do what Derek mentioned, lower the voltage a bit. Also, if your two heatsinks are the same size then you could remove the small fans on top of them and install a single, 80x80mm fan on top of both of them. I would recommend something like the Papst fans that run really quiet ...

Davd_bob: I gotta go with BCN on this one. What happens to a transistor inside the cpu under high current situations is that electrons might "leak" through in places where they are not supposed to. This is probably the biggest risk factor for overclockers, both when they increase voltage and when th...

Nope. Don't do that. Don't remove components and run the board. What might happen is that you might destroy other components that are relying on those caps. Since these caps are responsible for keeping voltages stable (among other things) I would say that the chance of the board not booting or destr...

I would say that if they have the same rating (or better in capacity and/or voltage) then you should be set. Just make sure that when you remove the caps that you are going to use, that you don't overheat when you solder them loose. Film type of capacitors are more sensitive to heat than other elect...

Hyperspace: The only thing I did was raise the voltage to 2.05 and it worked without problems. I only tried to boot the machine once at 2.0 volts per cpu and it failed so I didn't try again (if it fails once then it is bound to fail again..). At the moment the room is really warm where the computers...

Another update :) Yesterday I bumped the board up to 75MHz fsb. I upped the voltage on the cpu's to 2.05 and thats it! update: I tried overclocking to 75MHz fsb with the voltage at 2.0. The machine started booting but when it was almost done it hung hard. Not much to do so I reduced it down to 72 MHz fsb. It has been running stable at that for almost 48 hours now. Strangely enaugh, I am almost positive that the temp...

Dave: I didn't describe everything that I had to do, especially to get the first cooler mounted, but it did involve bending the clip. I must admit though, although I have had adventures mounting heatsinks on motherboards, I have never had the pleasure of pulling the socket off the motherboard :)

At last, new CPU cooler

(Post edited 3 August 2004 - became a BP6.com member and moved my pics over to by bp6.com webspace!) Hi everybody, As you know by now, I have been looking into changing my CPU coolers for something that will give me better cooling while being quiet at the same time. Because of the caps lying on both...

Just to inform: If you run Linux then don't worry about the size of your harddisk. The only thing you have to do is to make sure that the sectors you boot from are within the place on the harddrive that the BIOS can see and after Linux has loaded then the setup in BIOS will be discarded and Linux wi...

BCN: Thanks! I haven't been able to find Evercool resellers here but I will continue looking. Getting an example like this makes it also easier for me to find a model that will fit even if Evercool won't be what I choose!

Dave Rave: Thanks for the pics! Those dual jets were a blast! It is sort of a shame to have all that eye candy locked up in a box :) The pic showing the BP6 without coolers was a good one and gives me a good idea what to look for. OK. Got it. BCN: I thought the absolute majority of heatsinks just had a copper core. I haven't found any that are full copper that could fit the BP6. Another question: Could a heatsink shaped like this fit on the BP6? http://www.modsynergy.com/Review%20100.htm Is it possible to have two 80x80mm fan...

This is the heatsink I am thinking about: http://www.arctic-cooling.com/en/products/copper_silent2m/ Doesn't this sound good: "3 Selectable Rotation Speeds In order to reach the exact cooling that your CPU needs, 3 speeds can be selected via a switch. Thanks for the input guys. I still wonder how much a decent pair of coolers will change that delta (idle vs full throttle). Getting a difference of 15 degrees is quite a lot, especially considering the fact that summer is coming and I am in no doubt that it will be HOT! However, water cooling is out...

533MHz Celerons and heat

Hi everybody, I bought myself 2 533MHz CPU's the other day and replaced the 400MHz Celerons that were previously in the system. My 400MHz Celerons were overclocked to 466MHz and when the computer was idle I was seeing around 41-42 degrees C on the cpu's. Both had an Intel heatsink and fan. I have no...

Hi Blank Lou, The "cpuinfo" isn't really a regular file system file. Do this command: ls -l /proc And you will see that all files (except kcore) are set to zero. The /proc filesystem is kernel based so it isn't really a bunch of files that can be played with like other regular files. If you want a c...

Nice work hyperspace! A few hints & tips: The command "sensors" will give you a written text output from the sensors, essentially the same as what you see in gkrelllm. It would be worth trying but I seriously doubt that the kernel in Smoothwall is set up for SMP. I personally use a Ppro 200MHz with 128 megs of memory. It can easily handle my capacity which is at 11 Mbit download and just about 8 Mbit upload.
