ZIF Socket problems

Post by purrkur »

My BP6 version 1.1 board had a strange problem where one of the CPU's in question got really warm last time I set it up. I had no idea why except it seemed like the cooler wasn't sitting properly on the CPU itself. I have taken a closer look at the problem and found that the lever on the socket is the problem!

My version 1.0 board has a plastic lever on both sockets that integrates nicely into the socket structure once it is pressed down. My version 1.1 board has a metal lever that is bent at the end so that it is easier to get to and use. However, because it is bent, once the lever is in place, the bent part of the lever is higher than the CPU sitting in the socket. If you then take a large heatsink and place it on top of the cpu, chances are that the heatsink will also rest upon the lever. This means that the lever will be holding the heatsink a bit off the CPU itself.

I could just run this board of mine with Intel CPU coolers (I got four of those) and my 400MHz Celerons that don't get too hot but the problem is that one of the sockets on this BP6 has the center fastener for the clip broken off.

So if I want to use this board in a dual CPU configuration then I need to find myself a really small heatsink with a wide clip. I am having a hard time finding those over here :( Any ideas?
