i think what im gonna do is get a couple more ECS K7s5a mobo's and get either some durons or some cheaper athlons and go that route unless i am donated a bp6 with celerons on it.

bp6's are expensive on ebay and i could get a duron system that'd pump out 2-3x as many wu's as a bp6.

i'd love to have some bp6's in the stack but since i am selling my second mobo to a friend who wants to get into SMP. i figurered i sell hi mthe board for $20 (it needs almost all caps replaced) and direct him in the best speed setup

with work being like it is.. the stack will take time to build... but it will get there i got video cards, HDD's and now all i need is to spend about $100 per mobo+cpu for some k7s5a's with duron 1.6ghz cous

what do yall think?

Derek wrote:I suggest the BP6.Com Seti Farm run under its own SETI account so that we can keep track of it.

"BP6.Com SETI Machine" maybe?
I can see several diffrent ways of dong the farm.

1. We could setup a single unified setifarm account and ask everyone that build farms for the team to use it.

2. The operators of the farms would create accounts for the farms and we could go with a naming systems like "BP6.com setifarm - Operator Billy Bob" and "BP6.com setifarm - Operator Joe Blow". I had a thought of maybe we could keep track of the farm as we build them as well so something like "BP6.com setifarm #1 - Operator Billy Bob" "BP6.com setifarm #5 - Operator Joe Blow"

3. The people operating the farm could just run them under their account. The bad side of this would be someone choosing to leave the team.

Setting up a system that makes sence and that everyone could agree on would prolly be a good idea.

How I would setup things up myself would se something alonge these lines.

1. Setup accounts like setifarm1@bp6.com, setifarm2@bp6.com, setifarm3@bp6.com
2. As people wish to build farms give them the account to use for the farm.

No matter wich way you look at it we are all in a farm of machines working for seti.

i like hal's idea

except i like the name "bp6farm" or "bp6stack"

im not building a farm, i am building a stack

there is a big difference between the 2

a farm consists of several machine (cases, video cards, harddrives floppies ect)

a stack is nothing but a bunch of motherboards with video cards, some have HDD's and some do not, stacks do not have cases and most times they don't have any drives (maybe a floppy) but a REALLY good stack has nothing.. it is controlled by 1 machine which the other boards boot off of

which is why i want to use a bunch of bp6's and k7s5a's mainly because they are all the same exact thing, and it'd be easy to setup.

EVENTUALLY i'll get this thing underway, i hope to get some mobo's from someone to start, i'll buy the PSU's cause all i'd need are small 100-200W psu's

back to what i was saying originally

HAl has a good idea going, creating multiple accounts and as people build stacs or farms assign them a particular account

OR just have everyone who is running a stack/farm use the same account a provide info on the different stacks and who is operating them

I just had a brain fart. Rather than buying hard drives for each machine, buy the 64/128 meg usb ram drives. Access time (w/ usb 2.0) would be faster than a hd. They would be cheeper than a new hd and if you are using Win98, it should fit. Power requirements and heat should be reduced also.
Just a thought.

you could set a user_info.sah file available for to be pasted into a new seti-cmd directory
otherwise, people will need an email address and a password to log in with

and then they have to log in separate accunts to the bp6 user group

but you also need a 'separate' SetiQ so we can all see the numbers and then we can all hassle the operator when they stop with error 100 ;-)

I have a dream! and in it I am naked....wait... nevermind that is another dream.

When I have a bit of cash to blow, not any time soon mind you, I am going to get a relay rack to put computers in. I will use NIC's with boot roms to connect to a server and copy that machine work into a ram drive to run. I figure the server going out and backing up the contents of eaches nodes ram drive to their storage folder every 5 minuets or so would be enought in the power went off for a long period of time.

Somethine people building stacks or farm way liek to know about. In my last job I built a stack of test machines. It was 2 Abit ZM6's, 2 celeron 400@450, and 2 7200RPM 20GB westrn digital drives for very one PSU. I built ATX Y cables from 1 foot extensions, that was fun to do let me tell you

kuun: Maybe this should go in the classified thread, but I have some brand new el cheapo 400 watt ATX PSUs. The brand is duro. I think their claim of 400 is a little high, but the two I've used have been fine. I can let them go for $10 a pop plus actual shipping by USPS priority from 02861. LMK, if you build newer machines you may need the wattage.

I se you need procs, well, I have a celemine 566 also. I'll check back often, post here if you're interested.

kuun, did you need those Cel 366's i mentioned in the other thread? I didn't send them because I didn't think you wanted something that slow.

I also have a Duron 900 or so if you have any Sock. A boards in the stack.

That and a small box of PII 266's & 300's but those wouldn't be worth the electricity $$$$'s :screwy:

kuun, the PSUs are $10 each plus shipping which is exactly what I got them for. I am not making a dime, I just don't need them, and my roommate just moved out, effectively doubling my rent, unless I find some one to move in. This sucks because I own the house (3 family), but I have to pay rent because I own it with my cousin (the aforementioned rommie), and we can't lose out on the rent until the house is paid off - 9 years, 7 months to go.

As far as the 566, I could let it go for $18 shipped USPS priority.

My location is
shipping by USPS priority from 02861

The system time was ahead by a few hours for some reason. I adjusted it and all should be well again. Make sure your BP6.Com profile is set for your time zone so that the board can display the correct post time.
