when CMOS battery gets weaker your clock gets slower and you start to "loose" the time, especially you notice the longer you are on without reboting. but WinXP pro has this function that it checks with online time periodically and corrects it :)
I also have my batery dying, but still did not go to buy a new one... :)

Best to write your CMOS settings down before you change the battery! Clock generally loses time well before you lose the settings so you should be ok for a while..
