cheap added cooling for your BX chip set!

I hope that this is not old news, but I found an interesting little cooler on ebay and thought I'd pass along my findings.

It is a mini-Peltier-heatsink-fan combo that will strap right onto your BX chipset heatsink.

The beauty of this item is its low power consumption (2 to 4 amps max) and the fact that if properly installed there is NO CONDENSATION!

The price was US $4.99 plus shipping!

Sorry, no pictures yet, but here are the results:

With 2 PIII 1100E's at 100 Mhz on my BP6 my BX (with a 486 fan installed)was running at 97 Deg. F. at idle and over 106 and at 110 to 115 under full load it would become unstable and would lockup or crash win2k.

With this little gem in place I idle at 88 F. and NEVER go over 101 F. even while running Prime95!

OBTW, I can now over-clock to 110Mhz, but not completely stable YET!

Next upgrade is the modification of 2 GlobalWIN FEP-32's to accept 72 to 95 watt Peltiers (( US $5.99 on ebay).

My PIII's are running as high as 118 to 125 Deg. F. even with gorbs in place.

WORD OF CAUTION!!!!

Do not remove your existing heatsink! Instead, simply strap the unit to your existing "greenie"(after removing "greenie" and coating it with Arctic Silver) with a plastic wire-tie(be sure to coat top of fins of "greenie" with Arctic Silver also).

If you do not do the above the Pelt's existing heatsink cannot remove the heat from the BX chipset and will overheat if anything above 5.5 volts is applied to it.

As I write this I am at 1210 Mhz, dual 1100's @ 110 Mhz in WIN2K Pro and my BX is at 87.9 Deg. F. on my BP6.

Again, this is a version 1 board, 100 mmf cap replaced with an 1200 mmf 6.3 volt cap from RadioShack and the voltage regulator replaced with a LM317T unit per the "BP6.com archives" files (also from RadioShack).

Total cost not including CPU's, NEO370's and upgraded heatsinks, about US $10.00.

I think I have a total of about $250 to $300 US invested and I went from 571 Mhz dual/594 Mhz single(2 366's) to 1210 Mhz dual.

I am in the process of modifying my GlobalWIN FEP-32's to accept 72-95 watt 40 mm Peltiers. I hope to have this conversion done sometime today. This conversion is not for the sake of a higher overclock but for stability sake.

My total investment here (I had the FEP-32's from my Celeron's) is about US $25.00.

jaybird, I doff my hat to you. That is the most impressive upgraded BP6 computer I have heard of.

Got any pics of the pelt in action? I'd love to see what it looks like.

The 95W pelts proved to be to much for even the mighty FEP-32's.

The heatsinks couldn't handle the load and I fried one of my 1100's.

I'm back to one cpu (1100) and a GORB.

ANYONE WANT TO SELL ME A PIII 1100?

might i point you in the direction of a VERY nice cooler i have found?

check out "blowers" on newegg..

i got an Thermaltake Xblower from newegg.. $12.99

i put it on my duron 1.2HZ which at room temp with seti runing would stay around 42-46C

with this new hsf.. 38-40 at room temp!

for $13... and get this... it's only set at 2500RPM and it's quiet as a mouse... i can't hear it over all my other fans if i tried

Goto ebay, item 3472133153.

This is a photo of the top of the unit.

Caution! Pelt is NOT potted (sealed). I used GE clear silicon sealer/glue (good to +400 deg. f.) to seal edges of Peltier.

I am using two paralelled ATX PS (total 380 watts @ 18 amps) to power 3 Peltiers, two 72 Watt units and the Mini.

72 to 95 watt units are run at ONLY 5.5 volts! Present heatsinks can't handle the full 12.3 volts available!

Mini is at full 12 volt power.

No condensation at this time.

Present temps are BX440 @ 87.6 Deg. F. 1100 at 91.5 Deg. F. @ 110 fsb.

1100 Goes to 99 + 5 or 6 deg in Prime 95!

BP6 is air-cooled only at this time.

Do to cpu failure am running only 1 1100 @ 110 fsb at present.

Hope to get second 1100 tonight!

I wouldn't advise it! Its' not powerful enough or have enough heatsink mass or a large enough fan to handle an over-clocked cellerie!

However, it is perfect for Northbridge chip-sets and thats about it.

I figured for US $4.99 + S&H I did't have much to loose.

On the otherhand I got carried away and look what happened! I fried a CPU!

The word here is caution. For proper Peltier sizing goto www.overclockers.com (US) and read about Peltiers.
