Zeta - The Future Of BeOS

There is a review of Zeta (the successor to BeOS) on OSnews.com. It's only at beta stage, so many of the criticisms will be addressed before the final release, but it looks to me to be very promising.

Just saw that they have an (already) updated RC1 now: http://www.yellowtab.com/

You can already buy Zeta though there is no "final" version yet. Strange.... on a second thought, that looks like a microsoft business policy

I was thinking the other day, would BeOS work on a dual P4 xeon?

If so then i will give it a try again

Edit: Oh does BeOS work with Hyperthreading??

Got this from the invaluable Frizbe Hardware Matrix.

"This processor is intended for dual workstations and servers. While W2K and Knoppix report 4 processors when hyperthreading is enabled, BeOS's Pulse only reports 2 processors and at the wrong speed. I suspect that if I recompile pulse it will at least show the correct speed and model."

BeOS would absolutely fly on a dual Xeon, with or without HT.

A student version of Zeta is now available it is 30 Euros/32$ cheaper than the normal version.

I confess to having lost confidence in Zeta.

It seems they are working in the opposite direction to Be's philosophy. One of the beauties of BeOS was that it was a very lean OS, and all apps that the user wanted could be installed when required. Zeta is going the route of bundling as many apps as possible, along the lines of Windows and the popular Linux distros.

They have also yet to confirm whether they have the source code for the OS, despite pleas for the information. As such I conclude that they are simply building a distribution based on the unreleased BeOS known as dan0, which has been widely leaked over the last few years, and are offering nothing new.
