The New Linux 2.6 Scheduler
Interesting little article from ARS about the new Linux 2.6 Kernel Scheduler. Here's the link:
http://www.arstechnica.com/etc/linux/index.html
I wonder if we would see any improvements with just 2 processors. I'm thinking about recompiling MD Linux 9.2 with the new 2.6 kernel.
What do you guys think?

That's one things the article talked about.tapeworm wrote:i don't know about the scheduler, all i know is that i won't go back to 2.4, 2.6 is MUCH more responsive from a desktop user standpoint.
Great! Now, I just need to get all my capacitors replaced on my main Linux system and I'll be able to go to 2.6!
Thanx for the feedback, tapeworm!

Yeah, I have considered it but I can't see the immediate need though. My board is pretty old (from 1998) and I plan to change some caps a bit later on. I might upgrade the BIOS then as well. It has the latest Abit approved BIOS in it allready and it is rock solid for me (even with the old and original caps). The only issue I have found is that the fan headers don't work anymore. I might try to fix that as well.hyperspace wrote:Have you considered upgrading your BIOS to the newest RV?
I will probably document my motherboard makeover and I will let everybody know when that is up on the web somewhere.
Cheers,

Installed ManDrake Linux 10.0 and I must say the 2.6.3 SMP kernel has given my BP6 some new life! Everything seems to be much more responsive. I was experiencing some strange SCSI errors (/var/log/syslog). Haven't seen any since the new install. Still get the APCI errors, though.
uname -a:
Linux multiverse 2.6.3-4mdksmp #1 SMP Tue Mar 2 06:45:06 CET 2004 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux
My system was locking up every couple of days. After install, no lockups (keeping fingers crossed)!

Now if the damn APIC errors would just go away
I have seen some information about using the kernel option, "noapci". Haven't tried it, yet. Need to find out more about this option, first.
Hyperspace...
You mean "acpi", right? Well, if so then you don't need to worry about "noacpi" because you should have something similar in your startup:

Code: Select all
ACPI disabled because your bios is from 00 and too old
You can enable it with acpi=force

Re: 2.65
just ignore them. they are known to be harmless on the bp6 since years ago. if you really don't want so see them recompile your kernel commenting out the opportune printf in the sources (now i don't remember the name of the file, but a quick grep on the kernel should help you find it quickly)PJWilkin wrote:Smooth on 2.6.5
