The HPT366 controller becomes progressively less reliable as the system speed & drive performance speed goes up. If you care about the data stored & labor invested in what's in the 80G hdisk, you will pick up a Promise ATA100 or ATA133 controller & retire the HPT366 to CDROM & DVD duty only.

Hey, that's a useful site. When I last checked a few months ago it 404d me. Glad it's back up.

frenchy,

I'm sorry you haven't got a free PCI slot. Let us know how long you can run the 80G on the HPT366 before you decide which PCI card to swap out for a serious controller. Maybe your OS will be more friendly with the HPT366 than WinXP-Pro has been on my (3) BP6s.

No I'm not a Promise reseller.
Just picture my disappointment when I fire up my first CPU upgrade on one of my (3) BP6 systems after running dual 366@500 for almost (3) years. They have all just been upgraded to WinXP Pro, memory to 512MB, new 60G 7200 hdisk, now it's time for a needed CPU boost. The P-III/1100E won't even boot as I keep lowering the FSB speed. Finally, in desperation, I RAISE the speed to 99MHz & it boots. A few minutes later - blue screen crash. Reboot & more blue screen crashes at progressively shorter intervals. Scratching my head as to what I do next, in a flash I decide it has to be the HPT366. I run to CompUSA & find they don't carry the Promise - so, I settle for a Maxtor card. When I get home & open the box, the chip on the card says Promise on it. Install card & all problems disappear. work my way up to 110MHz over the next 10 days. Been running rock solid ever since.
Prior to this I had many drives get trashed totally running WinXP on my other systems too. It took a while to realize that HPT366 was the probable cause of all my woes. Brand new drive only 3 months old - trashed & unrecoverable. Pictures lost too.

I don't know what I'd use it to control.

Nothing, probably.
