No more boot after Solaris installation

Post by linefade »

Hello boardmates,

finally i had finished the hardware setup of my BP6 with two Celoron 366 and everything was fine with Roby 2 BIOS (HPT 1.28). Windows 2000 worked just fine at 366/2.0V or 550/2.1V.

Now I went to the last step and installed Solaris 9 on my second HD. After the installation process the machine rebooted and showed the first BIOS screen, then the HPT Screen, but then just turned to black and halted. I had Solaris running on this machine before and have no idea what could be the reason for that behaviour.

Normally the second BIOS screen should appear where the CPU, Memory and Adapter details are shown and the BIOS starts the boot process, but there is just a cursor blinking in the right upper corner.

I already cleared CMOS by jumper but no effect. Please help me, there is nothing i can do right now.

Thank You for all posts.

check the caps, voltage regulators, PCI cards - is there anything burned, bulging, leaking?

Hmmm. I gotta go with BCN there and say that I think this might have to do with other things than your installation of Solaris.

Alternatively I would disconnect everything (harddrives and floppy), remove all cards except graphics adapter, and all memory sticks except one and then try to boot the machine. If that doesn't work then try another memory stick and try again. If that works, start connecting PCI cards and disks again to see where it bails out.

Good luck...

Well,

i ran prime95 as a stability test for several hours at 366/2.0V before installing and it was very stable and without problems at 37, 32, 34 degrees celsius (mainboard, cpu1, cpu2).

the machine rebooted without any problems and i went to the installation. and then ... after the next reboot the machine didn't come up anymore.

maybe it has to do something with murphy's law, everytime my machine runs fine and i'm going to change something that is very usual, something unusual happens, unfortunatly this means that always some hardware parts went broken.

i only wonder why these things always happen when i install solaris??? it's some kind of phenomena.

so i'm going to disaasemble my whole machine for the x-th time and search for the problem. actually it is really like a chain-rection, one problem vanishes, the next one appears at once.
