Adaptec 29160 didn't work in PCI5

Post by Wolfram »

Hi all,

just in case someone has problems: I put an Adaptec 29160 SCSI controller in PCI 5, and it didn't work: The harddrive attached to it (Seagate Cheetah 15k.3 on the LVD segment) was not recognised by the controller BIOS. Thought the drive was defective, but took out my 2940AU from PCI4, put the 29160 in: Everything fine. Must have been an IRQ conflict.

Current config:

BP6, RU BIOS, ACPI enabled, Dual Celeron 366@523

AGP - Matrox G400
PCI1 - 3C905B NIC
PCI2 - Realtek 8139D NIC
PCI3 - Lifetec 9415 TV-Card,
PCI 4 - Adaptec 29160 (before: 2940AU)
ISA 2 -Soundblaster AWE64

OS is Windows 2000 SP4, but that should be irrelevant, because the Adaptec BIOS didn't see the harddrive even before the OS was booted.
BP6, RU BIOS, XP SP3, ACPI, 2x366@523(1,95V), Pentalpha HS + 1x 12cm fan @5V, 768MB, Powercolor Geforce 3, RTL8139D NIC, Terratec EWS64L, Samsung M40 80GB (2,5''), LiteOn CDRW

Thanks for the thumbs-up Wolfram. This type of info is useful for troubleshooting even other PCI cards.

Btw, I wonder how many problems we are seeing with new PCI cards and the BP6 could be incompatabilities between PCI version 2.1 and PCI version 2.2??

Maybe I should've read the FAQ again: PCI 4 and 5 share the same IRQ and busmaster signal, so problems could have been expected.

I still have a small issue with my setup: The maximum transfer rate and even the burst rate seem to be limited to ~60MB/s for the Cheetah 15k.3 (> 70MB/s max. rate according to storagereview.com). Don't know what slows down my PCI bus, but something does...

Concerning: PCI 2.2 card question: I have no idea, sorry.
