I am going to put some of my unused computer parts to a file server. I would like to put a single 300 Gb 5400 rpm on the BP6 using the onboard controller or the HPT366. It doesnt matter. Is that possible?
I dont want to buy a new controller, even if it costs as little as $20. And speed is not important. If 300 Gb isnt working, what is the largest that works?

Biggest largest harddrive on BP6?
I'm sure by now you've got it installed.
I run a 250gb harddrive on my bp6.
It does run rather slow...like its bogged down from the size.
I noticed the big slow down when I upgraded from a 40gb HD.
Moving and Manipulating large volumns of files in Explorer,
either locally or via a LAN is getting to be a drag.
Does anybody have any ideas about how to speed up
the HD access times on a ATA133mhz? ... Level6

Welcome, CatDaddy!
On the HPT366 or the standard IDE? Is it really running in UDMA mode? Did you check transfer rates and access times (with HDtach or Diskspeed32)?CatDaddy! wrote:I run a 250gb harddrive on my bp6.
BP6, RU BIOS, XP SP3, ACPI, 2x366@523(1,95V), Pentalpha HS + 1x 12cm fan @5V, 768MB, Powercolor Geforce 3, RTL8139D NIC, Terratec EWS64L, Samsung M40 80GB (2,5''), LiteOn CDRW
Your data and your labor investment in the 160G of high performance storage deserve something better than the HPT366 controller!Ehrs wrote:I bought a 160 gig Samsung drive instead. It works on both on-board IDE and HPT366. But I am having major problems installing Win2k pro on it. I tried that RV-bios but it won't work...
The chance of disk corruption is so great with this type of a combo - out of date quirky controller & up to date fast drive - that I can't warn you strongly enough to avoid the HPT366 and use a Promise ATA133 card.
Zero point energy
i would advise ANYONE against useing the hpt366 controller for any data storage devices

Actually I use a Promise Card and Drivers for my 250gb drive.
I'm overclocked to a 87mhz fsb, about 467mhz. 2.1volts
I've also performed all the other tweaks from the how-to-overclock
section. I've seen some actually improvement! Although Local and
LAN disk transfer speeds still suck.
I'm looking into getting the programs you mentioned and check
to see what I'm getting. I look to post those results for further
comments.

If you use an external controller, I can´t see why transfer rates should suffer. What OS are you using? Did you check if DMA is enabled?
