n00b linux question

I've just installed suse 9.1 personal, which was nice and eas conpared to the ftp option. I'm trying to install programs that arent rpms, and i keep getting a similar error. I seem to have to c compiler... I dont know how you can do much without one, and i havnt had any luck finding one to use... Someone can probably answer this really easily, but i dont know what im doing....
and secondly, the video viewer kaffiene (sp?) doesnt play video, and plays really choppy audo from avi files...
