Toroidal Core wire gauge?

Post by erik006 »

Does anybody happen to know the gauge of the magnet wire that's on the small toroidal cores on the bp6? Im working on the cap fix right now (ordered caps for digikey.com) and thought i'd replace the core wire (its all black and burnt)

Thanks!

I don't own a micrometer, but your best bet would be to email Abit tech support. Several members on this board have got useful responses from them.

At a guess, It looks like 0.5mm for the smaller coils, and 1.0mm for the larger ones. Check with Abit.

Be sure to let us know your results, erik006. This info would be good for the FAQ.

(don't press CTRL-W when you are trying to put in hyperlinks!)

Abit hasn't responded to my question yet, so I did some research on the web.

The measurements of the smallest cores on the BP6 seem to be ~8 x ~3 x ~3 (A, B and C respectively as seen in the picture) According to this site this corresponds to either a core size of FT-23-( ) or FT-37-( ).

Since we know that we wind 7 turns around the core. We can use this chart to determine the gauge of the wire needed. In our case this should be 18 or 20.

I'll go to the local electronics store and check out the wire size, i'll most likely buy a couple of spools and see which gauge seems the best.

Wire!

Post by erik006 »

So, I finally got around to getting the wire.

I went over to radioshack and I found a package that contained 3 different spools of magnet wire:

Here's a picture of the actual wire!

There's three different sizes in the package:

Now, replacing the wire:

First of all, this is what a burnt coil looks like:

Yet More wire!

Here's what it looks like when the wire has been stripped from the ferrite core:

Wow, that's pretty cool. Good work.
I probably would have looked(for months)for another mobo with a coil to steal.
There are *almost* no bad BP6s. There are mostly bad caps.

Good work fellows. :)

Hyperspace - could you fix the spelling of toroidal in the FAQ?
