How do I uninstall WINNT4.0 from a dual-boot system?

Postby jaybird » Tue Mar 11, 2003 8:38 pm

I have WIN98SE and NT4.0SP6 on my BP6 and I want to uninstall NT without disturbing my 98 OS and it's programs, can this be done?

Here is my configuration on the primary hard drive:

C: is a FAT16 partition, 2 GIG, 98 and hardware related files only
D: is a FAT16 partition, 2 GIG, NT and hardware related files only
E: is a FAT16 partition, 2 GIG, containing all of the 98 programs
F: is a FAT16 partition, 2 GIG, for NT programs
G: is a FAT16 partition for file sharing
H: is a FAT32 partition, 4.5 GIG for 98 video capture files
I: is a NTFS partition, 4.5 GIG for NT video capture files

I don't want to loose anything on C: or E: if possible, the rest I don't care about.

Is this possible? If so, how do I do it?

Boot from a Windows 98 startup diskette. Type:
fdisk /mbr
sys c:
Reboot
Remove the NT files and directories you don't want.

This is perfectly safe.

But, make sure you have all your important files BACKED UP!

remove nt

Great! But I forgot to mention one thing, I want to replace NT with 2000 Pro and maintain dualboot.

Will I still do the same thing and then just install 2000 Pro?

HPT366 driver installation

Postby jaybird » Wed Mar 12, 2003 7:37 pm

Ok, it seems that I can just simply do an "upgrade" to win2k and it should work. However, when attempting to upgrade I get a message that my ATA66 HPT366 controller will not work with this version of windows.

I guess that the NT drivers are not compatable with win2k?

I have downloaded the win2k drivers but am unsure as to how to install them when NT is running(win2000.exe is a program? Do I simply load it in NT and run it?)

How do I get my hpt controller to function in win2k when I already have the NT drivers enabled?

Copy the HPT366 Win2KPro driver onto a floppy diskette. When prompted during the Windows 2000 installation to, "Press [F6] if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver", press [F6], then "S" to load the driver and insert the driver diskette and Win2KPro will load the HPT366 drivers.

win2k installed and running on IDE, not HPT366!

Postby jaybird » Thu Mar 13, 2003 7:57 pm

I now have WIN2K/98SE dualboot but only on the IDE controller.

I have installed(correctly?, unsure)a win2k device driver (BETA 3) from this website. When connected to the ATA controller I can only get as far as the WIN2K splash screen, the bar moves halfway and my system freezes and won't go into windows (before installation of the device driver I got the NT "Blue Screen of Death" because it couldn,t see the drive(s)).

Highpoint BIOS 1.26, 1.22 drivers for 98 and the BETA 3 ATA for WIN2K from this website.

I am using a modified RU BIOS with the PIII micro code and 1, PIII 1100 CPU at this time.

I'm almost there! What am I doing wrong?

Ideas anyone?
