I had the same problems with 1.28 driwers in W2k and XP - a lot of clacking and banging from inside drive when shutting down... :( Otherwise I had to switch for normal ATA during install, cause with 1.25 drivers win2k would not install, neither XP... :( I really hate that 1.28 version! :(

i have posted some further questions on the forum, but in the install i just noticed it said for 2k i has to be installed twice i dont recall the win2k install process very well but i dont think i did it twice on it nor XP ever. Also in XP my hardware in the device manager remains marked unknown under other devices. whenever ive attempted to update drivers or install them in windows it locks up on boot, but it moves them to the SCSI section before reboot as i recall. should XP identify the drivers and hardware completely? it obviously works fairly ok without doing so.

I am using the same combination 1.28 firmware and 1.25 driver. The Win2K driver works with XP but needs to be installed at boot time the same as Win2K. 1.26+ of the driver cause the same noises (head park, 4 times, head bangs against the stop, WD 27Gig HD) even under Win2K.
I use the combination BIOS1.28 and driver 1.25,
this is the only combination which work with my WD450AA UDMA66 harddisk without any trouble. (with driver 1.28 I have loud "clack" noises while shutting down XP).

I can not boot XP with these either i had a maxtor 30gb ata66 which went fairly bad due to the random system lockups of the drive i RMAed it only to get a 40gb maxtor ata100 which has been slightly better but got errors quickly and still locks up. these drivers as others which ive tried installing into XP after install cause the system to lock on OS boot. Do I have to reinstall or run repair after deleting the old files?
