Probably giving it away as well. Someone here expressed an interest a few months ago, but I got a new job and house and kinda forgot. I've e-mailed him and offered it to him again since he did ask first. However, if he's no longer interested, or he doesn't get back to me in a week or so, I'll give i...

Sorry, but they're gone! Billl PM'ed me very quickly and sent me the shipping costs already. I had these posted on other FS/T forums for over a week and no interest, posted them here and they're gone in 9 hours. :) I'd have shipped to England. I used to live in Birmingham and I have a soft spot for ...

Free pair of Celeron 366s @ 550
Hi, My BP6 died a while back. :( I've decided not to replace it, bearing in mind the cost of working BP6 boards now. I do, however, have the CPUs from it left over. Since there's no trade forum here I'm posting this in the Processors section, sorry if that's inappropriate. They are a pair of Celeron...

So far, so good. I wish they'd get off the 2.6.8 kernel though, it's slow. Apparently it's 23% slower than Red Hat Enterprise, which runs off 2.4. This is what Kenneth Chen and Linus Torvalds have said anyway. 2.6.9 isn't so bad. I will say, though, that Ubuntu is every bit as RAM-greedy as WinXP. I...

Firstly, Slackware Gnome users can use dropline-Gnome. It's easier than trying to make Gnome work yourself and it's designed for Slack and compatible distros (e.g. Vector).
Second, you forgot Ubuntu, who will be bringing out 5.04 (Hedgehog) in April.

Dead BP6, working CPUs, coolers
My old BP6 has finally given up the ghost, it seems. It's been increasingly unstable over recent months, as I'd documented in other threads, and the other day it finally died. It wouldn't output any video signal, no POST beep, nothing. Well, one time in ten it would repeat a 3-second beep, which (I ...

Post your overclocking results!
I thought we should have a thread on the overclocks we've achieved on our BP6s. I'll start.
My highest overclock has been 594MHz (two C366s, 108MHz FSB). This is pretty stable at 2.1v. Increasing to 110FSB will boot and load an OS but crash as soon as any load is put on the CPU, even at 2.3v.

Just a note on RAM speeds: PC100/133 memory is often capable of more than indicated. Look at the markings on the actual chips on the DIMM. You should see a number at the end like "-8", "-7.5" or something. This is the speed of the chip in nanoseconds. Divide 1000 by this number and you will get the ...

With temps like that I'm suspicious of your case cooling. How many fans do you have blowing into and out of your case? It's no good having fans on the CPUs if all they're doing is stirring hot air around because no fresh air is coming to them. If the noise is bothering you, you could fit a blowhole ...

Disabling ACPI in Ubuntu 4.10
Disabling ACPI in Ubuntu 4.10 The default Ubuntu installation will enable ACPI, however, the BP6 is too old for this and it generally doesn't work. If you open up /var/log/messages and have a look, you will probably see flurries of lines that read something like: Jan 21 20:23:39 localhost kernel: A...

I'd recommend a Promise Fasttrak 66 or 100. See if you can locate a used one. Here's an example . I got one for about $12 Cdn on Ebay, works great. Recent Linux distros should pick it up just fine on installation. If you need to, there's a guide here on creating a boot floppy for it and installing L...

Installing K3B in Ubuntu 4.10
Installing K3B in Ubuntu 4.10 Ubuntu ships with Gnome as the default window manager. I think Gnome is great, and Gnome does now come with CD-burning built into the file manager. However, it's quite limited (at this stage it only burns data CDs and ISOs), and can't even burn CD audio discs, which is...

Enabling SMP in Ubuntu 4.10
Enabling SMP in Ubuntu 4.10 Ubuntu installs with a 386-based uniprocessor kernel by default. You can verify this by clicking Applications > System Tools > System Monitor. Only one CPU is shown. However, this is very easy to fix. Firstly, make sure your sources.list reflects all the repositories it ...

Okey-dokey. I think this is a great idea, Ubuntu is an excellent distro with many strengths: it's based on Debian, so there is lots of support for it; it's very easy to set up; and it runs fast even on a BP6, faster than WinXP in my opinion. Hands-down the best starter guide I have found for Ubuntu ...

I have my bp6's set to MPS version 1.4 but in the Power Management I have the ACPI turned off.... Ah, then that's definitely the problem. You're going to need to enable that for APM (sleep, suspend, soft power-off). when it's on, and the win2k is rebuilt to work properly, Iarsn Taskinfo shows 20-30...

I also have the same problems, but I never shutdown at all with any of the os's. I will shutdown but the power supply will all ways stay on. Does the screen say "It is now safe to turn off your computer" or something like that? If so, then you basically haven't got APM/ACPI on Windows. The front pow...

I never get into the KDE vs Gnome arguments because I simply love the fact that I have a choice. I agree. It's simply different strokes for differe...

Also I don't have any heat sink epoxy stuff ? between the heatsinks and processors. I think glue stuff will help keep it cooler too. Glue? What, do you work for NVidia or something? Just a joke. NVidia used to superglue their heatsinks on. Glue doesn't work very well. This isn't extreme performance...

I downloaded Debian (Sarge) and it's on 15 cd's. You probably didn't need to do that. I imagine you'll only use 10% of that software. The full package has all sorts of server-related stuff and tons of source code for everything. You're supposed to pick and choose what you need. 1) Will this new ver...
