The white IDE connectors are for the on-board HPT366 controller. Primarily for ATA/66 hard drives. Could have problems with this controller. Getting a PCI controller is the preferred solution for the BP6.

it is not that he could have , but he WILL have problems under ant NT-breed OS. After my experience, I would not even use them under any OS.

Hello and Me too

Post by duellius »

Hola!

I have frequented this website for the better part of a year. I finally registered a few days ago. It is great, however I'm sure that it's all been said before. Still, I really like the place.

I love SMP. Specific to this forum, I have a BP6 running twin Celeron 533MHz CPUs. I don't do a whole lot with it but I plan to change that. I flashed the BIOS recently to the RU version and have installed Win2K Pro on a 20 GB HDD. Now the BIOS and the OS cannot see anything attached to the second IDE.

I'm wondering if the BIOS did not flash correctly. I'd hate to think I broke this board somehow, only the 2nd IDE seems to have any issues - I would suspect something like a overload or other damage to the board would affect more than just one channel.

This looked like as good a place to post this question/problem. Hopefully someone has seen something like it before and has some advice for me.

Happy to be here,
Duellius

Are you talking about the standard IDE or HPT366 controller?

I found it really hard to get rounded IDE cables with all the holes in them. I managed to wreck one when I tried to punch a hole in it and the drill bit I used broke off.

I tracked down a rounded cable with 40 holes at a computer fair I attended recently.

Just take a needle nose pliers and twist the bugger pin off.
Triple check to make sure you are removing the correct pin though!!
The pin is not needed & just causes problems.

Clarification

Post by duellius »

hola!

To clarify, I'm not using the white connections - the HPT366 channels. I am using the regular IDE channels, it is the second IDE which does not seem to be visible to the BIOS or OS... The HPT seemed to work fine before when I used it a while ago of course that was before the BIOS flash I did.

I haven't tried the cable workaround, although I might.

So this is probably more of a cabling problem than some BIOS glitch?

Thanks!

So, what do you see in the BIOS?

update

Post by duellius »

Hi!

The BIOS would show drives connected to the first IDE but show "none" even if something was connected to the second IDE. I tried several different cables to make sure they weren't faulty. Still the same results.

Yesterday, I went into the BIOS and disabled the secondary IDE control, allowed it to boot and then rebooted into the BIOS and enabled the secondary IDE. Now, the BIOS and OS see the secondary IDE fine.

Problem solved I suppose but I don't feel any smarter.

Thank you!
