Kuun, you are thinking of yoshihiro's modifications.

iSDn is talking about modifications done by Yoichiro's. This is the WEB site for his modifications:

Interesting. I might try that myself someday. But I need a little translation. What is "To float from motherboard" supposed to mean?

And what about the Powerleap 370 adapters? Still available?

I take it this means "Do not connect to the motherboard or allow it to touch". As you can see from the next photo but one, that leg of the regulator is soldered to one of the legs of the new 1000uF capacitor.

The NEO 370s have gotten scarce recently. They can still be had but expect to pay an uncomfortable amount for them. Unless you get lucky and just run across some somewhere. Get the NEOs before you bother getting any of the other componants for the mod if you decide to go for it.

Piii Fsb

Post by jaybird »

Most of us who have gotten the PIII's to work use 100mhz fsb. I have been very lucky(lots of work!) and have been able to run for over 2 years at 110mhz with 2 1100E's @ 110 mhz.

The biggest single issue, IMHO, is active cooling of the BX chipset!

I will be getting two 866 MHz P3's pretty soon. It seems almost impossible to get any P3's that are 100MHz fsb's instead of 133MHz fsb's. The only ones I found were 600MHz P3's. In any case, if I run my 866 MHz cpu's at 100MHz fsb then I will be getting a maximum of 650MHz out of them.

CPU's

Post by Billl »

Purrkur you might try keeping an eye on Compgeeks (link below) right now the fastest they have is a pIII 700 but their stock changes all the time. The 700's were going for $29.50 used. Of course they do have faster 133's if you don't want to wait. I buy a lot of stuff there so I can say with confidence they are a good place to do business.

Thanks Billl! It is always good to get new ideas on where to buy used stuff. They even accept international orders which is great!

I bought my two 866MHz P3's for $35 and shipping costs with tracking for $23. I think it is a pretty good deal. If my "new" BP6 works after modification then I might be able to get something like 700MHz out of them if I get lucky. I am not really looking for top speed either since I am a bit sceptical at running the BP6 that hard. I don't think it was meant to deliver that type of current that those processors need (even if you change a regulator or two). I think the chances of getting it to work best is to go the middle road.

We'll see how it turns out for me. I will keep you updated on my success (or failures) as I go along.

Thanks again for the tip. I am sure it will come in handy in the future.

Purrkur,
I think you are right about not maxing out preformance on pIIIs. My opinion is that just like the average Medocino hits a wall about 575MHZ...the average 440BX hits that wall about 110FSB. Id pro'ly stay at 100FSB max just to protect the BX no matter how exoticly you cool it.

Yeah. I will probably play around with that a bit if my modifications turn out OK (and the motherboard works in the first place). I think running a dual 650MHz PIII would be a nice performance boost over my dual 576MHz because of the FSB, SSE etc. If I feel I need more then I could always upgrade the motherboard to a real dual PIII one.

I plan to do some performance testing to see what gains I get. I got several dual Celerons (366, 400 and 533MHz) and the PIII's in question so doing some real world stuff (like compiling the kernel, doing the SSH performance test etc) might show how much gain I am getting.

I'd be very interested to hear your results. I may do some PIII mods on my one and only BP6 just for kicks.

If you use software released about the same time as the Coppermines were in production you should do nicely. You are almost making your BP6 into a VP6 so there shouldn't be much advantage in getting a "real Piii" board other then being able to run at 133FSB.
