Safe temperatures for a 533 Celeron?
I have dual 533 Celerons running at 100% load in my BP6 right now, even though it's only using one CPU. The unused one is at 29 C and the one with 100% load is at 33 C.
How high can 533's be run safely for temps?

Until they become unstable. Seriously though, when my system was sitting next to a heat vent the CPUs got up to 45C under load and there wasn't any problem. I've heard of CPUs having shorter lives due to heat but I think that's a crock. In my experience, within the realistic useable life of the equipment only things with moving parts fail. I have an Amiga 500 and an Amstrad PC1512 (an 8086 system) that still work.

A lot higher than what you are seeing. I had my 533's working hard with horrible coolers and they were running over 45 degree C.Tim_K wrote:How high can 533's be run safely for temps?
I think that these Celerons are specificed from Intel at 65 Degrees (although I can't really remember, you can look it up in their documentation). Just remember that you are measuring the heat of the CPU from below the CPU and not inside so 30C there means probably 40C inside (just a guess though).

I have my high temp alarm set for 55. I never get that hot. I checked and Intel says 70deg is the max on 466-533s. 85deg for 433 and slower.
Jeez, you could fry an egg on those temps.

I pulled a drive with MS Win2000 Pro from a uni-cpu system and it didn't see the 2nd processor. After reinstalling Win2000 both processors showed up. There is a way to tell Windows you have 2 CPUs but it escapes me at this moment.

hyperspace, I wonder why processors with the same stepping should have a different maximum temperature. It's the same core only clocked to different speeds, right? So might these numbers mean that the cpus will only operate correctly at a given clock speed until that temperature is exceeded?

When i tried different voltages during overclocking i figured out this:
C433 at 1.75 V and FSB 80 was running stable at temperatures below 35°C
reaching 40°C the system stopped working.
Tried 1.75 V and FSB 66 it worked fine up to 50°C
When i increased the voltage to 1.85 V at FSB 80 the CPU's could handle 70°C (but i did this test only for a short time!)
By default i try to keep the CPU temp between 30 and 40°C using the fan control of BP6FSB (8cm fresh air fans blowing directly on the CPU-heatsinks - maximum throttle 50% - on idle 25% to keep case temp low - a noise issue)
Transistors work faster when they are cooler - so higher clockrates are possible.

CPU fans off (standard heat sinks), Sisoft Sandra burn in test (CPU arithmetic & CPU multi media) for ~ 10 min. at 100% load
Now i have adapted bigger Athlon heat sinks, they can handle passive cooling when not overclocked and with a additional case fan, but i have set the CPU fans to min 25% throttle to keep the system temp below 45 °C.

Wolfram, see my post here on Athlon coolers I use that work fine with the BP6. They are a tight fit but they do fit The great thing about them is that the heatsink is built to run with 80x80mm fans.
