Upgrade?

Post by kylewo0 »

Check my sig for my current o/p and more info.
I am wanting to get a faster running system and have no clue what to look for. I play high detail games and my bp6 is finally starting to lag on me =(
What do you all think about mobos such as
-Albatron's 478 -Pine's-and FC? they all have 400/533 fsb
any favorites???

I have (3) BP6 systems. A while back they were all Dual 366 @550 @500 & @466. I first upgraded one to a Cele2/1100@1198MHz+Neo370 adapter. The result was good, but not that much, speed up. The cost was good @<$100

My next system upgrade was a P-III/1100E@1.21GHz+Neo adapter. This one rocks. The 256K cache makes a lot of difference. Cost = $175 (including EverCool 715 copper cooler 70mm fan+Cu shim for $20)
I was hoping to get the P-III to OC at 124MHz FSB=>1.364GHz, but this has not been possible, even with the maxed out air cooling.
So, now I've got to decide whether to attempt the mods for dual P3-1.21GHz, or to go water cooling next. I'm reading posts from the H2O cool guys that indicate even with water cooling, 124MHz is not so easy!

I'm going to do my last BP6 with single P-III/1100E and see if it also dies at 124MHz FSB, and then decide what's next for me.

Ok so How do I go about getting this adapter ? First 1.2 sounds pretty quick compared to my 2 533 . Now the fsb on that you say is around 123?? That does not sound quick. My roomate has a 1.7 sony. But the fsb says 400. My 533 is around 78 maybe 72 or so
-Do you think that pIII will boost up my benchmark.. right now around 4162 all tweaked out. on Madonion's se
- I would like to try it for, you said around $120 or something.

The adapter comes from PowerLeap.com
You need the old Neo370 model & not the new Neo370/T.
Adapter price $25+ship
The P-III/1100E/100/256K/1.75V chips can be found on E-Bay.
Check with "Brick Wall" in the Internet Deals forum here @BP6
He said he has (15) CPUs for ~$125 each a couple days ago.
You get the 1.21GHz speed if your board can do 110MHz FSB.
I went from dual 500 Cele to single P-III@1.21GHz & I satisfied that the boost in speed was worth the cost - runs a lot cooler & more stable too.
Plan on $20 for an EverCool 715 copper sink+shim+70mm fan, unless you already have premium CPU cooling. Don't risk a cheap sink/fan on an expensive, hard-to-find CPU.
Keep in mind that doing the Dual P-III mods in the future leaves the door open to 2.4+GHz combined CPU power.

Ok, so is this easy to install,: comes with intructions?? Im ok with hardware. Dual PIII?
You can only get from 1.2 to 2.4 only if the programs you use support dual chips right? like i know windows 2000 does and when compared to 98-it doesn't

Yes, both Win2K & Windows XP-Pro do SMP (XP-Home is no go).
Many apps & games can't handle both CPUs, however, Win2k/XP will often keep the app thread on one CPU while the OS runs most of its threads on the other. So, the boost come from having way less OS threads interrupting the CPU of the App's thread(s).

Ok, I kinda follow you on that. I think?

I have 3 sons, ages 10,11, & 13. They play a lot of games. We also have a digital camera & do stuff with photos. Wireless LAN with modem sharing (cable modem coming soon) keeps me busy troubleshooting problems. Four PCs => a notebook & (3) BP6s. 4th desktop being built now & Dell PowerEdge600 server-P3/1.8GHz ($329) on the way. Setting up a Win2000 Server Small Business edition - Exchange, SQL & full Domain on the Dell.
