I remember a while back when (I think it was both LittleWhiteDog and Overclockers.Co.Uk) were on the board bragging about how they were going to pass our team in yadda, yadda. Well, they were doing things rightkuun wrote:i got 2 atm

They collected donations (both money and hardware) from their community and built a monster SETI crunching machine and kept adding to it.
Just a thought.
Electricity is cheap here, but you're right about the A/C in the summer.alnielsen wrote:Yes the cost for such a machine would be lower initially, but how much would you spend on electricity in the long run. Not just to run the machine, also to cool the house in the summer. In the winter you could just leave the windows open.

I'm setup pretty good down here; I have my own little "DC" for the computers and servers It has A/C and the works!
ehehehehe
im not worried about electricity
it's one of the only bills i have to pay (beauty of apartments)
so if you guys want.. i could start the bp6 cruncher
i'd definately love to

I thought we tried to do this a few times but could never could enough people interested in it.Derek wrote: They collected donations (both money and hardware) from their community and built a monster SETI crunching machine and kept adding to it.

Looks like I will be moving to NJ with my sister soon and the good thing I have found is about half of the places we are looking at include electric in the rent. So I should be able to get back to doing at least 80 or so a day then
Then I just have to get a job and then I can do some upgrades around here.
We never attempted the BP6.Com SETI crunching machine idea. I'm not sure how it would work out...HAL6000 wrote:I thought we tried to do this a few times but could never could enough people interested in it.Derek wrote: They collected donations (both money and hardware) from their community and built a monster SETI crunching machine and kept adding to it.

It's not much but I have a little bit to donate. I've got 5 Celeron 366MHz Socket 370 Chips that are just sittin' in my spare parts cabinet. I sorry but there's no mobo's or hsf's for them.
A few yrs ago the company bought a bunch of s****y micro-atx systems and these chips are all that remain. I don't use them in my BP6 cause I couldn't get them stable at a 100MHz and my 300's are rock solid. I ran them for a while at 75 with no prob's and maybe you'll have better luck.
They're yours if your willing to set up a Seti rack. I would volunteer myself but until I move, I can barely fit in the 2 systems I got running now.

i think i'm gonna replace my systems.....
my 400 does 14h 50m
my 500 does 11h 50m
my 533 dual running one at once was at 14hours
and doing dual they run 17hours
except for the electricity, they'd be better of as singles, doing about 11hours instead of 17, sigh.......
so, I think 2.4ghz is the current cheap processor, i see P4's aren't any more at 2.4, they just went to celeron, so just missed cheap ones of them.....
working in a computer shop, seeing the dual xeon 2.6ghz machines going out, I want I want....... (wipe slobber from chin)
dual xeon board, $500 au ex-tax
quad xeon, mega drool, $3,500, say what......
rather have 7 duals...

bp6's 3 x dual @ 533
. . . . 1 x dual @ 466
. . . . 1 sngl @ 400
[( 2 x dual xeon 2.4ghz )]
[( 2 x dual xeon 2.66ghz )]
[( 1 x 2.4C ghz )]
[( 1 x 2.4B ghz )]
[( 1 x dual AMD 1800MP )]
[( 1 x P4 1600 )]
[( 1 x 500 ppga )]
3 x piii 866

This is debatable, as in 11 hours on a single you get 1 unit. Yet in 17 hours on a dual you would get 2 units. So theoretically you can say that on the dual it takes 17/2 Hours to do a unit (8.5 hours).Dave Rave wrote:except for the electricity, they'd be better of as singles, doing about 11hours instead of 17, sigh.......
So when you look at it this way they are better off as duals.
[Edit]
Although thinking about it I might have the wrong end of the stick here.
I suddenly realized you might mean they would be better off using the same number of CPUs in single boards, when I first thought you meant take a CPU out of each and run it as a single.
If so then yes they would be better as singles.
