On a site which is about a board that takes Intel CPUs I think we all know which one has the better chance of winning.

For general purpose PCs: AMD or Intel Celeron. Good price/performance ratio.

For audio workstations: Intel CPU and chipset. Guaranteed compatibility with software.

AMD r0x0rz!

Postby ifeelqueasy » Tue Feb 10, 2004 4:19 pm

Only reason I use Intel is because the BP6 is so sweet and all my old <200mhz pentium boards were free. Alright, so I bought a dual PPro board too. So for SMP I like Intel because I can find they're old stuff pretty cheap on Ebay.

But my AMD Athlon 900 is still my favorite

I was AMD all the way due the huge price advantage...until my last system. AMD 1700XP on a Gigabyte board. Always high temp and usually flakey. Even after I slowed FSB from 133 to 120. Gosh, I just realised...I replaced an AMD 1700 with my BP6 dual 500 celery.

I still love my K6-III 400.

how?
what mobo/cooling are you using.
my xp1700 was the first unit i ever needed active cooling in the case. opps, i didn't realise that until i ran it for several months without any case fans. had 512 meg ram that is now flaky and i initally blamed that for the system instability. i put the ram stick into a PC-Chips ECS mobo with a cel333 running at 500 with no problems. 20yr old daughter in jr collage uses it.

bwi's 1700 is probably a t-bred chip. They run at lower voltages and the 'B' type ones overclock well. Also the temp of 38c he gives is most likely from the sensor under the socket, his on die is probably mid to high 40s.

My 1700 tbred B is also running at 2.18, I limited by a kt333 board and can't go any higher with the multiplier. My mushkin ram is PC2700 cl222-1t, and although it could go higher, the board is unstable at anything over 171 fsb, so I'm stuck at 2.18ghz.

That's fine by me for now, when I get an nForce2 motherboard and some good pc3200 or pc4000 ram we'll see what this chip can top out at. Best $65 bucks I ever spent. 710mhz overclock first try, no tweaking, bumped the voltage .025v.

That's why I voted AMD. (Also because the first computer I owned that wasn't given to me was a k6-2 550, and I wish I still had it, great chip)

um...i happen to HAVE a k6-2/500. It overclocks easy to 600 but i pulled it and put in a k6-3/400.
that one doesnt over clock worth crap but it still out preforms the k6-2 because of the 256k on-die cache.

I prefer Intel they simply OC better then AMD's. Intel has always been more conservative with binning their CPU's. And now with Hyper threading Intel really blows the AMD out of the water running SETI. My P4 2.8C does 2 WU's in the same time my AMD 2800+ does one!

Billl is probably right on Intels stratagy.
Find the max a chip can do and then charge full price for producing it at half that speed. Then charge full price for every 33mhz increase and sell the public on the need to purchase every increased mhz chip.

But you do have to face it, Celly 333s oc easliy 50% but so do AMD K6-3+ chips.(with sufficent cooling protection of course)
