Hey,
No one said anything about networking speed on this thread. That was kind of suprising since the BP6 is an OC wonderland. I have been going to the school of hard knocks for the last 3 years on this stuff so I will try give a few lessons I learnd. If Im wrong on anything someone let me know.

1 Hubs are slow, switches are fast. A hub has to split its bandwith between all units plugged in and a switch can fee them all its max speed. 3 units plugged into a 10base HUB will only get 3mbit. 3 units plugged into a 100base SWITCH will all get 100mbit.

2 10base-T is ok for most home networks but for serious gaming upgrade to 100 base-TX. It is worth the few extra bucks.
My Dungeon Seige reported 12-23ms on 10base and 1-2ms on 100base.

3 Windows 95 or 98 can use 10base but only gets 15-30mbit out of 100base.

4 If you have a wireless network, anyone(smart enough) that is close enough with a laptop and a wireless device can log onto your network and have access to your resources. I read on MSN how a reporter uses this technique to send in her work when she travles. She never plugs into a hard wire.

Ok enough,
My network is built from scratch. A mobile home so yes Im trailer trash, running under the house are the cable TV, Phone lines and Network are builtin to every room in the house that doesn't have a sink. Cat5-E cable.
1) Wifes is (hiss boo Compaq Presario) /Athlon 2800 /IDE 120gig ATA133 /DDR 512meg-ram /builtin 100base-TX full duplex /WinXP home /Uses builtin shared video. AGP slot is empty for now.
2) Mine is K6-III 400 /IDE 4gig Quantum bigfoot ATA33 /on a super-socket7 with 1meg of L3cache(anyone familure with this) /FSB100 128Meg /realtek PCI card 100base-TX /Win98(Can't fully use the 100base-TX) /32meg agp ATI video.
3) Livingroom with net access so I can keep an eye on my 14year old daughter when shes online. BP6 dual 500s /80gig WD 8meg cache ATA33 /66FSB 256 ram /Realtek 100base-TX /Win2000pro /32meg TNT2 agp. Still has bad caps..when I change them I plan on pushing it from 66fsb to 100fsb.
4) 14 year old daughter has HP pavilion /pII-350 /4gig Ultra SCSI /128 ram /FSB100 /PCI Realtek 100base-TX /Win98 /32meg PCI video.
5) extras. System one I just got and will get rid of. Super-socket7 with a 300mhz K6-2. max FSB looks like 83/ Not set up. System two, PC Chips celey-366/ no ram/ built in Davicom 100base TX. Not set up.
extras p2-300, Cel-copermine 766, Athlon 1700XP and Gigabyte board.

I have to many irons in the fire to check out the Athlon1700/Gigabyte.

I am wanting to populate the BP6 with 768meg of ram. Maybe there is a trade in there somewhere.

Were you interested in the AMD 300mhz mobo/cpu for the SETI rack?

Hmmm my first post,

ive got an AMD xp3000, 1GB dual channel ram, 2x40Gb hds and a 80Gb sata drive, with gigabyte lan, DVDrw. only uses 100MB lan cause of switch.

second is a Toshiba Laptop 2.66Ghz P4, 512MB, 15.1"tft CDRW/DVD, 100Mb lan.

third is the Proxy server running a free 30 trial of Comsocks(just uninstall and remove frome registry and install again), 200Mhz pentium1 with MMX, 64Mb of ram, total of 12Gb HD space, 100Mb lan, and 56K modem (Getting broadband when BRITISH TELECOM can be bothered.

fourth is a 2Ghz celeron, 80Gb hd, geforce 4, 100Mb lan.

and fifth is the ABIT BP6 should recieve it next week its got 2 400@probly about 520 but i will have to see. 256Mb ram, Geforce fx5200(it was free) gonna get a pair of 500s or 533 for it. this is going in a heavily modified case. see www31.brinkster.com/bluliz in a couple of weeks.

all connected by a 5 port belkin switch

got a spare laptop thats a 75Mhz compaq laptop, 4.7Gb hd, and 100Mb lan
and 3x 24 port hubs made by netgear.

just need broadband/adsl then it wont take 2 hours to download a 30Mb video aahhhhhhh. :evil:

bluliz: If you were to have 400s at 520, that would mean your fsb would be 86-87mhz. The bp6 doesn't have the 1/3 divider until 92fsb, so your agp would be running at 86 and pci at 43. Not good, and I wouldn't recommend it.

The best option for 400s, if they will run it (proper cooling, and a good PSU to start) is 92fsb for 552. Other wise stock or maybe max of 75 fsb is your best bet.

my old geforce 256 could run at mid 80s on an abit be6, the sound worked as well.

But i have blown up nic's in the past, did get an xp2000 to xp2200.

how stable are yours at 552? what video/sound cards u using?

Video cards used in this config: AGP GF3 ti200 64MB, AGP Matrox G100 4MB, PCI GF2 MX400 64MB

Sound: Currently ISA Creative Vibra 16 PnP, also used a pci ct5803 (creative SB16 OEM), but needed to move cards around anmd had to go to a ISA soundcard when I added a promise tx2000 IDE card.

1. P4 2,4GHz on Abit TH7II, 1GB Rambus, 320GB HDDs, Radeon 8500
(This one's for the heavy duty stuff like rendering ....)

2. P3 800 on Abit BE6II, 384 MB, 106GB HDDs, GF2 GTS
(Main box for university's stuff)

3. P3 700 on noname (FSC) crappy board, 128 MB, 20GB
(My moms' office box - doing freecell nearly all the time)

4. Dual Celi 433 on ..guess what ;-)

, 256 MB, 7GB SCSI
(Latest piece of hardware I got. Will replace the P3 800 at home.)

5. AMD K6/2 400, ....., 64 MB, 6 GB
(My brothers' box for office work)

and here's the shot:

6. 8088XT, 640kb RAM, 32MB harddrive, 8bit ISA NIC (BNC connector)

All connected via Longshine 100Mbit switch. (Well, at least 5 out of 6)
The XT can connect to the AMD via BNC cable when AMD is running DOS.

Looking at the list from a distance tells me that I must be sone kind of
mad ... :-?

1. Athlon XP 2400+ running at 166MHz FSB (2083 MHz), 1 GB Kingston PC3200 RAM, ASUS nForce2 motherboard with built in NIC, Soundblaster Live!, 2 Seagate harddrives (60+40BGB), NEC 3520 DVD+/-RW, DVD player, TV card (Pinnacle), Geforce Ti 4200 AGP 8x w/128 megs of memory. Running Gentoo Linux. 20.1" Philips LCD display@1600x1200. My first workstation.

2. Soon to be running again BP6 with 2x550MHz Celerons, 768 meg PC100 memory, Soundblaster PCI soundcard, 1 Seagate 40GB harddrive (to be replaced by a 80 GB Maxtor drive), a Geforce 2MX 32 meg graphics adapter and a 3Com 905TX NIC. Running Debian Linux (unstable). 17" CRT screen, but might end up connecting to the Philips screen above. My second workstation.

3. Athlon 1 GHz on an ECS K7S5A motherboard, 512 meg PC133 SDRAM, built in network and sound, 40 GB Seagate harddrive. nVidia Quatro 500/600, 128 megs of memory. My wifes machine, running W2k Professional (thoroughly locked down and no MS mail or browser used). Connected to a 17" Philips LCD@1280x1024.

4. K6-2 500 MHz on an Aopen motherboard w/256 megs of PC100 memory. 40 GB Seagate disk, 16 MB Nvidia Riva TNT graphics adapter and Realtek RTL-8139 NIC. Headless machine working as my webserver. Running Debian (pre 3.1).

5. 266MHz Pentium II with 128MB PC100 SDRAM, 8MB ATi 3D Rage Pro AGP adapter, 2 Realtek RTL-8139 and 1 3Com 3c595 NICs. Harddrive used is an IBM-DPLA-25120, 5GB. Headless machine used as a router running Smoothwall Linux.

The network holding these together are two 100Mbit switches. Machine 4 is found in DMZ while the others are on a separate local network. I have also bought myself a Linksys WAP54G wireless accesspoint that I use for my two work laptops here at home. The first laptop is an IBM T20 700MHz P3 w/512megs of memory while the other is a brand new T42 w/1GB memory, 1.8GB Dothan Pentium-M, ATi 9600 Mobility graphics etc). I will use the wireless for other desktops as well in the near future.

Machines found here but not used for the moment:

1. 500MHz Pentium III, Abit BH6 MB.
2. 450MHz K6-2 on a Super 7 board from Shuttle.
3. Sun Ultra5 w/384 megs of memory and an UltraSparc IIi 360MHz CPU.
4. Pentium Pro 200Mhz Dell w/128MB EDO memory.
5. Dell based Pentium 100MHz w/128 megs of memory.

Of the above, the Sun will be put to work running Solaris 9. I might try Solaris 10 but I have seen the hardware requirements and this little machine isn't really fit for the job if those specs are to be believed. It will also be run as a headless machine for work needing Solaris.

Some update:

I moved the 2,4 GHz box over to my office at uni because the Athlon64
became the layout-machine for the whole office. So most of the time
its in use for layout work.
The other PCs are still at home.

My mothers and my brothers PC connect to the net via ISDN cards.

The rest connect to the net using the AMD K6/2 400 as router.
(The router also connect to the net via ISDN card.)

USR V92 attached to a dedicated phone line (this is the arctic) running into an SMC Barracade 7004ABR Router.

My Dead intel box Asus P4S533 with fried Celeron 1.7ghz 768megs DDR ram 8Gig main drive 80gig secondary, 52x cdrom, CDR/rw built in ac97 SOUND, 10/100 NIC, ATI Radeon 7500

Wifes toy Generic AMD k6/2 500 192 megs SDR ram 10 gig hd CDROM, DCR/RW 3com gigabit NIC, and whatever came withe board for sound & Video, need a goods video card.

My Current comp till the BP6 gets here
DEC Venturis FX-2 I put in a AMD k6/2 400 which the bios says is a k6 300, but it benchmarks out at 400. Incorrect bios reporting. built in everything except a Tbase 10 nic, thats sux 8gig hd & cdrom, thank god for having a backup.

IBM 300GL P1 mmx 200mhz 92megs ram CDROM Creative Ensoniq Sound, 10/100 ibm nic nice old system. work for his needs

all with 17" monitors

I had (have) all 4 running on the network from the dialup, suprise! it works not half bad for such a narrow pipline. Add the soon to arrive BP6 dual 500mhz with whatever I scrounge up, I have 3 128 megs sticks of ram coming in so the BP6 will have some memory. It was a server till they took it down and I got it

and ofc assorted bits and peices of comps, including an old dell opti V466

Ok here is my list for what it's worth:

Cable connection with all machines connected to a 10/100 lan. Multiple switches all over my basement.

1> P4 2.8C oc'ed to 3.3 1 GIG of OCZ PC3700. ABit Ic7-g mb. ATI AIW 9600 Vid 160 & 250 GIG hds. Does 15 - 18 S.E.T.I. wu's per day.

2> (2)AMD 2800+ refirb HP's 512 ram. ASUS NForce mb. No vid card 120 gig hd's. Does about 8 - 10 wu's per day each.

3> AMD 2400+ 512 ram no vid card 80 gig hd. Does about 6-8 wu's per day.

4> P3 1000 IBM refirb 512 ram no vid card 120 gig hd. Does 4-5 wu's per day.

5> P3 750 Dell GX 110 256 ram no vid card some old crappy drive 20 gig I think. Does about 2.5 wu's per day.

6> Celeron 366 Oc'ed to 550 in a Soyo mb. 128 megs of ram. Some crappy vid card. Couple small drives. Does wu's in about 14 - 20 hrs.

7> Via C3 1.2 (runs at 800) 512 ram. Syntax mb cpu integrated. no vid card. 45 gig hd. Does wu in 30 hrs if I'm lucky lol.

It is entirely possible to secure wireless networks. Any base station should support basic security features. Most people don't turn them on out of ignorance. This is a bit old, but should still be a good starting point.

Ok, my networking setup is pretty simple.

I've got a Linksys Etherfast 10/100 hub which is uplinked to a 1500/896 stand alone DSL line (Qwest doesn't make us [girlfriend and me] buy a stupid land line we won't use).

I've got my workstation, currently a PII-400 (will be my BP6 as soon as I can get her running again) plugged into the hub.

In the past, I've used a null modem serial cable to hook my 486 laptop into my computer (it doesn't have an ethernet card, and I've never tried to get the modem to work).

My girlfriend has a Dell Inspiron with a 1.13GHz PIII, also plugged in to the network.

The DSL modem is the cheapy one that Qwest gave us, but it works flawlessly with our Linux machines (my Slackware box and my Girlfriend dual boots Debian and XP. Yes, I have a Girlfriend who runs Linux. It's as hot as you might guess).

Actually davd_bob That totals 22 I have (2) HP AMD 2800+ systems :thumbs:

. I can't match the output of some here. Mostly because I have to pay for all the machines I have crunching S.E.T.I. Unlike some people on here that have their companies resouces to draw on. Everything I crunch, all the machines, and Electricity is paid for by me. Not that I mind in the least, I see this as my contribution to humanity. What is actually holding me back at this point is space. My basement looks like a mad scientists computer museum :biglaugh:

Also I've just finalized the newest system I'm building. It will be a P4 3.0C (Nortwood core, Prescott's run too hot in my opinion) in an Aopen Intel 865 chipset board. 1 GIG of ram. Probably the 300 GIG hd I have still laying around here. If I can find a cheap Gigabit switch I may run it between the two P4's I have since they both have Gigabit adapters.

As to Processors I have so many here it would be hard to list them all. Way more then will fit in the boards I have available. I'll list a few but this won't be complete. Celeron 300A, 333A, & another slot one Celeron I can't remember the speed. Two matched Celeron 500's, couple 800's, 533, 566, 650, 1000. Older stuff AMD 266 & 233, many various 486 chips.

Atropos,
If you want it I have an upgrade that will really be interesting, challanging and frustrating.
It is an Intel card that plugs into an 8bit slot. There is a cable that plugs into the 8088 socket after you pull the cpu.
On the card is a 386DX socket and a 387socket for the math co-pro.
I ran across a 486 upgrade for 386 sockets. That is on the card now so the card will turn an 4.77Mhz XT into a 486 40Mhz with the compainion 487 making the system a full 486DX.

The card has only 1meg of ram, and if you could find it you could at a 4meg upgrade card, but it was cost prohibitive for me. The ram on the original motherboard has to be removed for the card to work.

It will leave the system with the limits of an 8bit ISA bus but will handel anysoftware written for 486DX code...mostly that is. No software will install on its own because the system is to hybred. It can do Windows 3.1.

Time for a little update, heres my newest stuff:

P4 1.6 is now up and running.

New Laptop HP AMD 64 3000+ Does about 11 work units a day when on. I love this thing!

HP AMD 3000+ does about 8 - 9 units a day. This thing is a bit of a disapointment. It runs hot and doesn't produce near what the 2800's do.
