The Blu-ray Disc Association plans to modify the minimum specifications that Blu-ray disc players are required to meet. Some were worried that the altered specs would make current players obsolete once the new players hit the market this October. Luckily, that is not the case.

According the PCWorld, "[the new] specifications only expand on the capabilities already present in existing players."

Since the battle between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray technology is ongoing, it looks like we will have to settle and buy both types media to get the best of both worlds! icon_cool.gif

Their main allure is increased storage capacity. For example, HD-DVDs can hold up to 15GB on one side, and Blu-Ray discs can hold up to 25GB on one side. The first benefit that comes to mind is the ability to store higher quality audio and video than the regular DVD standard.

The problem (in a nutshell) is that Microsoft is backing HD-DVD with the Xbox360 and Sony is backing Blu-Ray with the PS3. Since the two formats are incompatible, you’ll be required to purchase special players for each! It would be nice to have one format and stick with it. We will have to wait and see how it pans out.

There are blu-ray recorders on the market. Plextor, for example, sells one. Not sure about HD-DVD.

It's too bad we have to deal with another product war.
Sure it's cool that we've got massive density optical discs, but I think it's unfair to the consumers to be forced to buy both or make a choice.
