Big problems with my new BP6 :(

Post by brak »

Hi :D

I got some weird problems with my new BP6 :?

First of all the config:
Abit BP6 rev. 1.1, RV bios, 2x Celeron 466, 192 MB RAM (64+128 MB PC133), Riva TNT2 M64 (or GeForce 2MX 400 SDR), 3Com 905B

Windows XP SP2 installs fine, everything seems to be working fine (i can even launch SuperPI & Prime95 - 100% load on both CPU's) but i cannot watch any movie! :) it freezes after 1-2s right after the movie starts playing , same thing after watching several wallpapers

Does anybody know what's happening with my board? ;)

EDIT: the capacitors seem to be fine, EC10 is 100uF 16V
(same unstable operation even with 1 CPU)

Welcome to BP6.Com, brak!

It could be the EC10 capacitor. Even if all your 1000 µF to 1500 µF capacitors look good, you may have one or more that are failing. It is the capacitor's copied electrolyte that causes problems.

Personally, I would try replacing EC10 with a 1500 µF capacitor. 6.3 WVDC is possible. No more than 10 WVDC. You describe graphic intense crash (freezes) events.

drop MBM on it and watch the hi-lo figures you get while it's running.
the vtt line (2nd cpu) should be at 1.50v
with the 100uf EC10 it moves. if it moves too far (1.3? - 1.6?) the system starts to go

It 'jumps' from 1.3 to even ~1.8V
I'll try replacing the EC10 with a 2200uF 6.3V and describe the results ;), thanks for the input :D

Try also testing your memory. Download memtest 86, put it on a floppy and let it run a few passes overnight.

Mem runs fine even at 133 MHz CL2 on my second PC ;)

I'd not go past spec on the EC10
a 1500uf is optimal
I had one board replaced with a 1000uf and it was much better
100 not too bad unless bad
1000 better
1500 good
2500 - ?? any ideas what having too much capacitance might do ?

On Yoichiro's site he states that 2200microF would cause instability here.

after changing EC10 to Jackon's 1500 uF 6.3V LOW ESR capacitor the board started working :D :coolman:
